Inelastic tunneling through mesoscopic structures

چکیده
Our objective is to study resonant tunneling of an electron in the presence of inelastic scattering by optical phonons. Using a recently developed technique, based on exact mapping of a many-body problem onto a one-body problem, we compute transmission through a single site at finite temperatures. We also compute current through a single site at finite temperatures and an arbitrary strength of the potential drop over the tunneling region. Transmission vs incident electron energy at finite temperatures displays additional peaks due to phonon absorption processes. Current at a voltage bias smaller than the phonon frequency is dominated by elastic processes. We apply the method to an electron tunneling through the Aharonov-Bohm ring coupled to optical phonons. The elastic part of electron-phonon scattering does not affect the phase of the electron. Dephasing occurs only through inelastic processes. @S0163-1829~99!11819-8#

Mesoscopic quantum transport: Resonant tunneling in the presence of a strong Coulomb interaction.
Coulomb blockade phenomena and quantum fluctuations are studied in mesoscopic metallic tunnel junctions with high charging energies. If the resistance of the barriers is large compared to the quantum resistance, transport can be described by sequential tunneling. Here we study the influence of quantum fluctuations. They are important when the resistance is small or the temperature very low. A r...

The fundamental problem of phase saturation of electrons in a disordered mesoscopic system at very low temperatures is addressed. The disorder in the medium has both static and dynamic components, the latter being in the form of two-level systems (TLSs), which becomes just about the only source of inelastic scattering in the limit T → 0. We propose that besides the inelastic nature of scatterin...
متن کاملPerturbation of tunneling processes by mechanical degrees of freedom in mesoscopic junctions.
We investigate the perturbation in the tunneling current caused by nonadiabatic mechanical motion in a mesoscopic tunnel junction. A theory introduced by Caroli et al.1–3 is used to evaluate second order self-energy corrections for this non-equilibrium situation lacking translational invariance. Inelastic signatures of the mechanical degrees of freedom are found in the current-voltage I(V ) cha...
متن کاملLandauer Theory, Inelastic Scattering and Electron Transport in Molecular Wires
In this paper we address the topic of inelastic electron scattering in mesoscopic quantum transport. For systems where only elastic scattering is present, Landauer theory provides an adequate description of transport that relates the electronic current to single-particle transmission and reflection probabilities. A formalism proposed recently by Bonc̆a and Trugman facilitates the calculation of ...
متن کاملInelastic relaxation and noise temperature in S/N/S junctions
We studied electronic relaxation in long diffusive superconductor / normal metal / superconductor (S/N/S) junctions by means of current noise and transport measurements down to very low temperature (100mK). Samples with normal metal lengths of 4, 10 and 60μm have been investigated. In all samples the shot noise increases very rapidly with the voltage. This is interpreted in terms of enhanced he...
